The Mayor of Newbury to be Arrested

Date(s):
21 May 2011 (All day)

On Saturday 21st May members of Earl Rivers Regiment of Foote, The Sealed Knot, will be arresting the recently elected Mayor of Newbury, Councillor Jeff Beck. The event recreates a scene from the 1645 when Royalist soldiers garrisoned at Donnington Castle entered the town and attempted to hold the Mayor to ransom. Their plan was to demand food and provisions from the townspeople in return for the safe release of the Mayor.

The modern day Royalists will march into the Market Place, arriving at approximately 11am, when they will arrest the Mayor, list their demands and then collect donations from the public in aid of Help for Heroes.

There will be photo opportunities at this point before the soldiers gather in front of the Town Hall, release the Mayor and march out of the town at approximately 12noon.
